Don't let your inner critic sabotage your day!

Being self-critical is a great way to push yourself into being a better person. Perhaps you want to do your job better. Or you want to help community members. You may even want to yell less at your kids. When you critique yourself, you have the ability to make changes. But, can you go too far with this?

If you use self-criticism as a way to doubt your abilities, this becomes counter-productive. It’s one thing to say I want to improve and then find ways to go about doing so. It’s another when you infuse negativity about your abilities or even the abilities of others.

It is important to use that inner voice to help you achieve success, as you define it. There are plenty of instances where you need to learn how to silence that inner critic.

You want to accept who you are. The person you have become took years to get there. If you need to make changes from within, focus on the aspects of your life that hold you back and use those as the basis for your change. Everything you have done or accomplished in your life can’t be wrong. You wouldn’t be where you are if that were the case.

When you find times when you need to silence your inner critic, you will need positive reinforcement for yourself and from others. These affirmations can help push you through the negativity and help you come to the realization that you have positive qualities. The key is to repeat these affirmations, so they become a natural part of your life. Create a journal and record the times when you are feeling like you are putting yourself down. Revisit the journal at a later date to review and make this as part of your regular routine.

Some people need a bit more of a push to break from constantly thinking negative thoughts. In this case, it’s best to seek professional help. These professionals are trained to help people who find it difficult to do this on their own.

Silencing your inner critic takes some practice, but the rewards are worth the effort. You will increase your self-esteem and have a better outlook on life. One thing is clear, you will achieve more when you keep this positive focus than by constantly bringing yourself down. Others will also notice those positive changes and for the most part, will embrace them.

Learn to laugh at yourself and your situation!

You have probably heard the term laughter is the best medicine. It may even be a bit cliché at this point. However, it still holds quite true. If you are feeling down, forcing yourself to smile or laugh can turn your mood around.

If you are in need of a pick-me-up, make sure you hang out with people who are upbeat. If you are with others who are down as well, it’s going to be difficult for each of you to get out of your funk.

No one can truly be happy 100% of the time. If you are unhappy more than you are happy, it could be time to seek some help. But, part of your therapy could very well be to use laughter.

There are clinics that promote laughing as part of the group. It entails gathering in a circle and forcibly laughing while the group participates. Depending on who is running the event, each person may take a turn laughing and then the group joins after the last person completes the exercise. It seems strange to outsiders, but participants are proponents of the methods. They get a good feeling after the sessions, and many say they make great friends in the process.

Laughter can help lower stress as well. It releases endorphins in your brain which are responsible for you feeling good. It is even believed to help in producing antibodies which can fight disease. This could be how the phrase, laughter makes the best medicine, came about.

You may feel strange yourself early on when incorporating laughter into your routine. But, even if it is forced, as you do more you'll get more used to it, and it will stop feeling strange over time. You will have the tools you need to change your mood. After a while, you will find yourself laughing for real rather than forcing it.

It will improve your general outlook on life. People you associate with will also take notice and want to hang out with you more. Give it a try for a consistent period. Notice the changes that you experience in your feelings. It is likely you will never go back to the way it was. While no one can guarantee using laughter will make you live longer, it won’t hurt you in any manner. The question is, why wouldn’t you use it if you’ve got nothing to lose?

Beware of your thoughts!

Do you find yourself thinking negative thoughts? You learned these early on, and they get reinforced on a daily basis. It happens on television, the internet, and at work. It happens when you talk to people in your neighborhood. But, what happens when those thoughts turn from negative thoughts to destructive ones? And what if you direct those thoughts at yourself?

Destructive thoughts can be a dangerous path to follow. Hopefully, if they are happening to you, they won’t last, and you can get back on track. However, should they continue indefinitely, this should be cause for alarm.

Destructive thoughts, such as feeling hopeless, can turn into depression and despair. This can lead to other behaviors such as heavy drinking or drugs. It can make you withdraw from life and feel like you have nowhere to turn.

If you have been feeling down for any length of time, find someone who can help. If you are feeling depressed and even suicidal, don’t wait to take action. Depression is widely believed to be treatable, and treatment doesn’t always have to be with drugs. A qualified professional will know the right course of action to take. It may even be covered by insurance.

If you feel like you are not yet at a point of being depressed or thinking destructive thoughts, but the thoughts are still negative, you should be able to shake free from this. Start by listing what you have in your life. This doesn’t mean the material things. It’s the people in your life that love and care for you. If your health is good, this is another item to go on the list. These are items that make you grateful.

Visualization can also help alter your mood and your mindset. Think about times when you were happy. What was present during those times? Was it your friends and family? Whatever ingredients were present, try to recreate them.

Although this article gives some suggestions for things to try when you are feeling down, it is not meant to be used as advice. Only a qualified professional can diagnose if there is a problem and what to do about it. Don’t take advice from others who are not qualified. Family members may have good intentions, but they probably have not been trained to handle extreme cases of destructive thinking. Even if some are, it’s usually not a good idea to treat family members.

If doing a task takes you four times as long as somebody else, it might be a simple lack of focus. Find what works for you and make it happen. For example, if you are motivated by a sales goal then put pictures of what you will purchase with the money around your office.

Optimizing Your Focus

If doing a task takes you four times as long as somebody else, it might be a simple lack of focus. Find what works for you and make it happen. For example, if you are motivated by a sales goal then put pictures of what you will purchase with the money around your office.

If you are motivated by accomplishing tasks than use a pie chart to illustrate the work that needs to be done. Then, at set intervals erase pieces of the pie until it is completely empty.

It might just be a matter of distractions. Don’t play music while you work. Turn the ringer off the phones. Don’t sit in front a window if you are distracted by the cars going by.

Working smarter not harder is about peak performance and peak focus. When you are working at your peak you get more done in less time. Leaving you time to do more of what you love.

Self awareness is a difficult skill to master. There’s a reason so many people go to therapy to help them with this diagnostic skill. However, for the mindful person it is just a matter of practice.

Understanding Your Moods

Self awareness is a difficult skill to master. There’s a reason so many people go to therapy to help them with this diagnostic skill. However, for the mindful person it is just a matter of practice.

Take note of your moods during different times of day. Write down your mood at different intervals. Pay attention to what you were just doing and what you are about to do. Note things like the weather outside and the type of food you are eating. This process will take a few weeks but the more specific your notes, the more precision in the outcome.

You might find that you really aren’t the morning person you imagine yourself to be. Or that a type of food makes you tired. It could be as simple as that afternoon program you love sucks all your energy.

Knowing your moods is key to conquering them. This will keep you from emotional eating or taking out frustrations on a loved one. Don’t let your emotions control you, control them instead.

Positive Thinking Activities

No one said that life was easy and one way to overcome obstacles is to have a positive mind set. While this is can be difficult to achieve there are several activities you can do to improve the way you think.

Using games and activities such as hypnosis, guided meditations, affirmations, quotes and listening to subliminal messages can be extremely helpful. As can reading self help books on positive thinking. Try falling asleep at night to subliminal messages or read a positive affirmation before going to bed.

Changing your mindset involves learning how to express your feelings. One way to do this is by keeping a record of your feelings. This can be done by writing your thoughts and feelings into a journal, either online or by using a pen and notebook.  If you aren’t much of a writer then playing an instrument can help you express your feelings. If this doesn’t appeal to you then you may like to paint or draw to express yourself.

Dancing and singing are fun to do no matter if you have a talent for them or not. Both are a way to show how you are feeling and to rid yourself of negative feelings. If you don’t like to sing or dance then listening to uplifting music can also help.

Another positive thinking activity is exercise. It has been shown that exercise helps to increase your endorphins and allows you to feel refreshed and more energized. Try going for a walk first thing in the morning and see if you don’t have more energy during the day.

Talking to a good friend is another therapeutic activity which is good for your mind and body. A friendly chat with someone can help you put things into perspective and make you understand that things aren’t necessarily as bad as you think.

Changing your environment is another way to start thinking more positively. You may not realize it but you can automatically associate certain places with negative thoughts. By going for a walk in a new park or by visiting a new lake you can reinforce good thoughts. Just getting away from it all can be a wonderful way to put your life back into perspective. You can collect your thoughts and organize your priorities and get your life on track along with thinking positive thoughts.
